Custom Close Message

Customize the message shown when your Google Form is closed

When your form closes — because it hit a response limit or reached its scheduled close time — respondents see a message. Choice Eliminator lets you customize it.

Setting a Custom Message

  1. Open your Google Form
  2. Click the Add-ons (puzzle piece) icon → Choice EliminatorStart
  3. On the Form tab, set a response limit or a schedule
  4. Enter your custom message in the Close message field
  5. Click Save

Default Message

If you don't set a custom message, respondents see Google's default:

"This form is no longer accepting responses."

Note: this message shows when the whole form closes. When only an individual choice is eliminated (but the form is still open), respondents instead see the "No spots available" placeholder on that option.

Writing Effective Close Messages

Be Clear

Tell respondents why the form is closed:

  • "Registration is full. Thank you for your interest!"
  • "The submission deadline has passed."

Provide Alternatives

Guide users to next steps:

  • "Spots filled! Join our waitlist at link"
  • "Applications closed. Follow us for future opportunities."

Stay Professional

Match your organization's tone — formal or friendly, as long as it's clear.

Tips

  • Keep messages concise — respondents see this on a simple page.
  • Include contact info if respondents might have questions.
  • Preview the closed form to check how it reads.

Character Limit

Close messages support up to 500 characters — plenty for a clear, helpful message.
