One Question at a Time
A conversational layout with one question per screen, Enter to continue and number keys for choices
The One at a time layout shows a single question per screen, the conversational style many people know from Typeform. It suits short surveys, lead forms and sign-ups, where a long page of fields would put people off.
Turn it on
- Open Live form settings and go to the Theme tab
- Under Layout, choose One at a time
- Click Save
It works with every look and theme color.
What respondents see
- One question per screen. A section header or image that comes before a question is shown with it.
- Email first. When the form collects email addresses, the email is asked as the first step.
- Enter to continue. Pressing Enter moves to the next question. In a paragraph answer, Enter adds a new line and Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) moves on.
- Number keys for choices. On a choice question, pressing a number picks that choice.
- Required questions hold the step. A required question that is not answered shows its error and stays on screen.
- A step counter. It shows how far along the respondent is, and is announced to screen readers.
Choose what shows
In this layout, Show has five more switches:
- Step counter
- Enter hint
- Number keys
- Arrows
- OK button
Turn off the ones you do not want. A form with only the OK button is the calmest; number keys and arrows help people who answer by keyboard.
Embedded forms
One at a time works in an embed too. The form does not trap the keyboard, so the page around it keeps its own shortcuts.
